Physics 2048-801 August 1998 - Rabson
General announcements
- 12/4/98. In the solution to the statistical-mechanics problem
on the homework for week 15, the number of ways to
have one spin up is 8, not 7, so S_1 = kB ln 8 = 2.08 kB.
All other results remain. I have corrected the handout on
the Web.
- 11/13/98. Several people have asked where they can find
The Hunting of the Snark. The library owns at least five
copies; it is also available through Project Gutenberg;
see link on my personal page on this server.
- 10/16/98. Clarification on quiz solution: in problem 1,
I include the air along with the earth in counterbalancing
the momentum of the falling object.
- 9/24/98. The university will be closed Friday, 25 September
through Sunday, 27 September for a possible hurricane. Class
is canceled for Friday.
- 9/19/98. If you had found PDF-format (Acrobat) files unreadable,
try again. I've installed a new PDF converter.
- 9/16/98. My solution for practice-quiz problem 2 was wrong.
I have corrected it.
- 9/10/98. The first sentence of my solution to problem 4 from
week 2 should read "The product between two arbitrary
vectors gives the projection of one on the other times the
length of the second."
- 9/6/98. A student turning in a homework solution at Friday's
lecture asked to have it back as soon as possible.
I promised to have it ready in my office right after the
lecture, but the student never showed up. Come by;
I've got the paper.
- 8/25/98. I found an error in my solution to problem 6 on the
diagnostic survey: I'd double counted some of the restricted
telephone numbers. I've corrected the error on the versions
posted here.
- 8/24/98. The department very strongly recommends signing up for one
of the sections of PHZ 3102, the one-credit companion course
to 2048. It is advantageous, if possible, to sign up for
my section of 3102, Wednesdays at 1:00 PM. However, if
your schedule does not permit this, you may register for
Dr. Mukherjee's (Tuesdays at 5:00 PM) instead.
Items restricted to enrolled students
Note: to protect privacy, the following items require a username and
password, as given out in lecture. This level of security does not,
however, protect against a determined interloper.
