Solid-State Physics I is a first course for graduate and undergraduate students interested in physics, electrical and computer engineering, materials science, and magnetic data recording. We cover the classical and quantum theories of the conducting, insulating, and semi-conducting states, elastic properties of crystals, lattice vibrations, and thermal characteristics of solids. A major goal of the course is to give students the minimum they need in order to get something out of most articles published in the Physical Review, Section B. The course is the prerequisite for Solid-State II (PHZ 6426) and Materials Physics I (PHY 6938) and Materials Physics II (PHY 6938). All information exists in three formats: dvi, Postscript, and PDF. The dvi format is readable only on Unix. Postscript is readable with the free Ghostscript/Ghostview software, which is available for Unix and Macintosh/Windows, while PDF is readable with either Ghostscript or the Adobe Acrobat reader, which is also free and available for Unix and Macintosh/Windows.

WARNING: I have provided PDF for all the Postscript so that Windows users may also view these files. However, PDF produced on Unix is not compatible with PDF viewers on Windows, so the results may be unsatisfactory.
