Solid-State Physics I is a first course for graduate and undergraduate students interested in physics, electrical and computer engineering, and materials science. We cover the classical and quantum theories of the conducting, insulating, and semi-conducting states, elastic properties of crystals, lattice vibrations, and thermal characteristics of solids. A major goal of the course is to give students the minimum they need in order to get something out of most articles published in the Physical Review, Section B. The course is the prerequisite for Solid-State II (PHZ 6426) and Materials Physics I (PHY 6938) and Materials Physics II (PHY 6938).
